The Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) mandates that all “at-risk” funeral firm employees attend an OSHA training session at least annually

  • 1910.1030(g)(2)(i) to (g)(2)(ii)(B) Information and Training—Employers shall ensure that all employees with occupational exposure participate in a training program which must be provided at no cost to the employee and during working hours. Training shall be provided as follows: at the time of initial assignment to tasks where occupational exposure may take place at least annually.

  • 1910.1048(n)(2) Frequency—Employers shall provide such information and training to employees at the time of initial assignment and whenever a new exposure to formaldehyde is introduced into the work area. The training shall be repeated annually.

The State Board of Mortuary Science of New Jersey (Board) regulations mirror the federal OSHA standards requiring licensed funeral directors to receive annual training in applicable OSHA laws and regulations. As per federal standards, the training must be in-person; online courses will not meet the annual OSHA certification requirement.  

Licensees that are seeking to receive and apply continuing education (CE) credits for OSHA trainings toward licensure renewal must attend a course or program approved by the Board. 

Although there is no required number of CE credits to be earned in OSHA for licensure renewal, Board regulations establish a maximum of three (3) credit hours that may be applied to the biennial 10 CE requirement.
