Hospice Professionals

The New Jersey State Funeral Directors Association, Inc. is committed to building strong relationships with caring professionals throughout the state. We continue to support the work of hospice, knowing the enormous difference it makes in the lives of the terminally ill and their families.

As part of the guidance and support hospice offers families, we encourage hospice staff to broach the subject of funeral arrangements with families. Documenting wishes ahead of need alleviates a great deal of stress at the time of death.

Preneed arrangements can take many forms for hospice families. At a minimum, these families should select a funeral home so rushed decisions do not need to be made immediately following death. Families comfortable in making further decisions can sit down with their funeral director and plan the details of the arrangements as well as prepay the funeral.

For your information, making funeral prearrangements is commonplace and not just for the terminally ill. Prearrangements are now a regular part of estate planning. In addition, many Medicaid applicants make prepaid funeral arrangements as part of the program eligibility process.

Please refer families to our Website for information on making funeral arrangements, for details on the New Jersey Prepaid Funeral Trust Fund™ and laws that protect funeral consumers. We also maintain current information on other topics of interest to families, such as who has the right to control funeral arrangements, funeral costs and memorialization options.

Please call us if you need information on any matter related to funerals and funeral planning. If you are a member of a large staff of social workers/counselors, NJSFDA staff are willing to conduct seminars on funeral planning at your location. Call us at 800.734.3712.

Thank you for the great work you do. Please let us know how we can help support you in your compassionate care.
