Who Gets Copies?

Funeral directors can secure additional copies of death certificates on behalf of family members and others who are eligible to receive them.

Those eligible to receive death certificates are parents, legal guardians or legal representatives, spouses, children, grandchildren and siblings if of legal age, state and federal agencies for official purposes, pursuant to court orders and under other emergent circumstances as determined by the Commissioner.

An individual listed as a beneficiary on a life insurance policy who is not eligible to receive a certified death certificate needs to ask the life insurance company to request one directly from the State Bureau of Vital Statistics and Registration.
