Notifying Social Security

You do not have to notify Social Security of a death. The state's electronic death registration system (EDRS) will transmit a notification of the death to the Social Security Administration when the funeral director files the death certificate.

This notification of Social Security helps avoid identity theft and enables the government process changes in benefit status.

If you do continue to receive social security benefits after a death occurs, you should contact the Social Security Administration immediately to rectify the situation.
